A Study on the Headache and Craniomandibular Disorders in Dental Students

Abstract
A study on headache and craniomandibular dysfunction was performed on students, in Dental college, Seoul National University, by means of headache questionnaire and interview and through evaluation of stomatognathic system. In 320 students, who were 91 females, aged from 20 to 26 years(22.3?.2) and 229 males, aged from 18 to 29 years(22.4±1.6) were examined by same examiner. And the obtained results were as follows;
1. In 320 students who were in dental college, 165 students, 51.6%, had headache. And in headache students, 99 students(60.0%) had tension-type headache and 56 students(33.9%) had mixed-type headache and only 10 students (6.1%) had migraine.
2. Palpation index, dysfunction index, craniomandibular index, Helkimo´s anamnestic dysfunction index and Helkimo´s clinical dysfunction index were not significantly different between headache and headache-free control groups according to gender.
3. Palpation index, dysfunction index, craniomandibular index, Helkimo´s anamnestic dysfunction index and Helkimo´s clinical dysfunction index of tension-type headache group were not significantly different from those of mixed-type headache group.
4. Palpation index, dysfunction index, craniomandibular index, and Helkimo´s clinical dysfunction index of headache group were significantly different from those of headache-free control group(p<0.01). But there was no significant difference in Helkimo´s anamnestic dysfunction index between headache and headache-free control groups.
5. The craniomandibular index and Helkimo´s index of headache group was higher than headache-free control group.
